Cairo
USA/UK, 1963

George Sanders, Richard Johnson, Faten Hamama
Directed by Wolf Rilla

A man just released from prison takes up his earlier plan to steal King Tut's jewellery from the Cairo Museum. With the help of a few egyptians he actually succeeds in his plan, but then the trouble begins.

This film is actually a remake of director John Huston's 1950 "The Asphalt Jungle" (based on the novel by W. R. Burnett), with a switch of locale from the brooding, empty streets of downtown America to the teeming bazaars and markets of Egypt. The dialogue of both films is exactly the same in several places. Though not as effective as the original, this film nevertheless works fine for those with a passion for anything Egyptian. Filmed on location in Cairo, Suez and on the Luxor West Bank. It also includes some interesting nightly scenes in the Egyptian Museum. Several Egyptian actors play key roles, most notably "The Lady of the Arabic Screen" Faten Hamama, Ahmed Mazhar and Kamal Al-Shennawi.

Cleopatra
USA, 1963

Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Rex Harrison
Directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz

Epic film about the historical and poetical drama of Queen Cleopatra of Egypt who wants to stabilize her power by using the tensions in the Roman Empire. Julius Caesar falls in love with her and helps her keep her throne. After Caesar's death she chooses for Marc Anthony, but thus gets caught in his power struggle with Octavianus (Augustus). In the end they lose all. The film is infamous for almost bankrupting film studio 20th Century Fox. It was made at a cost of $44 million, an impossibly extravagant figure for that time. This was partly due to the fact that the film's elaborate, complicated sets, costumes and props had to be constructed twice, once during a botched shoot in London and once more when the production relocated to Rome.

On Marc Anthony's return however, he is reprieved. Next Ottavio declares war upon Egypt, Marc Anthony dies and Totonno takes his place. Finally Totonno returns to Rome with Ottavia at his side and served by Cleopatra, who he has made his slave.

English title: "Totò and Cleopatra". Toto is played by Neapolitan actor, writer, and songwriter Antonio de Curtis, whose stage name was actually 'Totò'. He was so popular that his movie vehicles often incorporated his name in the titles. Some of these, notably "Totò e Cleopatra", "Toto d'Arabia" and "Toto Sexy", were parodies of established 'serious' film genres.

Love in Karnak
غرام في الكرنك

Egypt, 1967

Farida Fahmy, Mahmoud Reda, Abdel Moneim Ibrahim
Directed by Aly Reda

Story of an up and coming Egyptian dance troup that wants to become famous. They work hard to lure the tourists away from the monuments and the tombs of the pharaohs.

As part of a series of government-sponsored movies centered around the Mahmoud Rida Troupe of Folkloric Arts that recycled traditional Egyptian song and dance forms, "Love in Karnak" is the first film in the series that abandons studio drawing room and nightclub sets for the great outdoors. As the title suggests, the movie features several scenes and dance performances among the ancient monuments in the Luxor/Karnak area, such as the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari. There is even a Hollywood style back-in-time dream sequence in which lead dancer Mahmoud Rida fantasizes an encounter with Pharaoh on a lavish court set.

The titular robot has clearly Egyptian features such as a nemes-like headdress, but the storyline itself contains no references to any ancient Egyptian origin. See also the later (1992) animated adaptation entitled "Giant Robo - The Day Earth Stood Still" or "Giant Robo - The Animation".

The Tomb of the Cybermen
UK, 1967

TV-series Doctor Who

Patrick Troughton, Frazer Hines, Deborah Watling
Directed by Morris Barry

The Doctor's TARDIS arrives on the planet Telos where an archaeological expedition, led by Professor Parry, is trying to uncover the lost tombs of the Cybermen. With help from the Doctor, the archaeologists finally manage to enter the tombs. There, two of the party reveals themselves to be planning to revive the Cybermen. They want to use their strength, allied with the intelligence of their own Brotherhood of Logicians, to create an invincible force for conquest. It transpires however that the tomb is actually a giant trap designed to lure humans suitable for conversion into Cybermen - a fate that almost befalls both Logicians. After fending off an attack by Cybermats, small but dangerous cybernetic creatures, the Doctor finally defeats the Controller and his revived Cybermen, and reseals the tombs, destroying the Controller in the process.

Set of four episodes (1.5 hrs in total) from the fifth season the British sci-fi cult series "Doctor Who" about a time-travelling adventurer known only as "The Doctor". Though the episode contains no direct references to ancient Egypt, the featured tomb of the Cybermen contains enough parallels with it, or at least with what popular culture expects such a tomb to be. It has massive ancient looking tomb doors, booby trapped to prevent those less than worthy from entering, and hieroglyphic-like cybermen depicted on the wall; the dormant cybermen discovered in the tomb are locked up in standing sarcophagus-like cases, their coming to life feels quite eerie, and even the small cybernetic creatures called Cybermats scurrying around are somewhat reminiscent of the scarabs from the more recent mummie movies. The long running "Doctor Who" series, started in 1963 and (after a short break) still running today, has various episodes that contain more direct references ancient Egypt, in particular to to aliens who (supposedly) were revered as gods by the ancient Egyptians. See elsewhere in this list.

Canada/USA, 1968

TV-series Rocket Robin Hood

An attack by Robin, Will and Little John on what looks like a tax collecting ship owned by Prince John has an unexpected result. The trio are captured and transported to the planet Nilor, which bears a resemblance to ancient Egypt in terms of its structures. The ruler, Emperor Tut, has a proposal for the Robin and his friends with unpleasant consequences promised if they turn him down.

Episode 41 of the animated adventure sci-fi series "Rocket Robin Hood", which is about Robin Hood of Sherwood Asteroid, a space age version of the medieval outlaw who continues his ancestor's crusade against heavy taxation, despotism, and the general forces of evil. The series, which ran for 147 episodes from 1966 until 1969, uses quite a number of elements derived from the ancient classical world. "The Solar sphinx" is the only episode that plays in an Egyptian setting. An earlier episode entitled "The Dark Galaxy" (#37) features a planet with East Indian and Egyptian architecture and some mummy-robots in the service of the forces of evil, but has nothing else of Egyptological interest and was therefore omitted from this list. And contrary to what the title suggests, the episode entitled "Cleopatra Meets Little John" (#16) is about a female dinosaur with that name. It was therefore also omitted.
